The Five Coin Game

Classic schoolyard game of strategy, reflex and skill.

Variations

Equipment

While most people play with coins, this game, or variations of it has been played with:

  • Coins of various size
  • Plastic chips
  • Sandbags or beanbags

During the Break

Nobody knows where the rules of the break came from. If I was to guess, it'd be a combination of logic, probability, trial, and error. The area where most variations occur is how to handle the 3 coin stack. Some players prefer to brake it down further, other rules (the ones I played by) calls for an automatic lost of turn, while other rules require a coin drop through a "filter" of losely interlocked fingers. Go figure....

During the Toss

This is where it gets interesting..... Aside from the basic clap multiplier, I've seen "specialty tosses" that players can opt for instead of the standard toss.

  • Elbow Toss - Bend your arm back, and place the stack of 5 coins on the tip of your elbow. In a sweeping move, swing your arm downwards to catch the coins.
  • Flush - Place coins one next to another on the back of your hand, along the middle finger. Catch all 5 in a sweeping motion.
